Asus Eee PC 1000 HE vs 1000 HEB

In researching netbooks recently I saw a review where someone said that they bought the 1000HE from Best Buy, and when they got it home they started noticing things weren't available that they were expecting and eventually found that Best Buy actually sells the 1000 HEB not the 1000 HE. Turns out that the competitively priced computer at Best Buy is a heavily watered down version. Note that the HE-B is the black HE, the HEB is Best Buy's cheapo version.

I did a little searching and here is a list of things I found to be different between the two:

-No Bluetooth on the HEB.

-7 hour battery on HEB as compared to 9.5 on HE.

-HEB has Atom N270 rather than N280 processor. Minimal horsepower difference, 1.6 compared to 1.66 GHz, but it also has higher power consumption and is paired with a slower FSB.

-The HE reportedly has a sound card upgrade, although I could not find the model of either.

-Both have 802.11 b/g/n, but the n is limited to 2.4 mhz on the HEB, compared to 5 on HE.

-HE comes with a laptop protective carrying sleeve

-I could not find any information about eee drive for the HEB, but the HE comes with 10 GB of online storage.

I just found this interesting, and I put the list together from several different sources, so thought it would be worth putting it all together.

  • Thanks for sharing about all the differences. I bought the best buy version of this eee pc and was just trying to figure out where the bluetooth was and realized something was amiss. I feel irritated that I bought something thinking it was something else, but am still pleased with the purchase overall. But I should've done better research than simply get excited at the Best Buy price.

  • Thanks for posting the comparison. I *almost* bought the 1000 HEB, but after reading the comparisons, the search will continue.

It's weak, to say the least, that the version at BB is permitted to carry the 1000 HE label.

    Seriously? 1000HE-B or 1000HEB?

  • Thank you I would have made a big mistake with a big price tag!

  • Where did you happen to purchase the 1000he?

  • I picked mine up from zipzoomfly.com

They are available from several sites, but I have been extremely happy with zipzoomfly, and they have a $30 mail in rebate now that brings the price down to $350, so for the same price as Best Buy, you get much more.

  • My friend has the HE and I just got the HEB. To tell you the truth, they aren't much different. I tried them both and they run about the same. I didn't need the bluetooth and even though mine has the 270 processor and my friends has the 280, they perform just the same. Though mine performs a bit better due to the fact that he's running Windows XP and I'm running Linux Mint.

  • Sounds like comparing apples to oranges to me. I am glad it is working well for you, but for the same price I would get the higher end machine personally.
